Welcome

LewesActionforSocialHousingBanner-2

We are a cross-party group, lead by Emily Clarke from Lewes Labour Party. We’re campaigning for social housing – including council homes and other genuinely affordable housing – on all sites as they become available across Lewes District.

We believe that a safe, secure, affordable home is a right, not a privilege and that houses should be homes, not an investment opportunity. That is why we are campaigning to ensure that the building of social housing for genuinely affordable rent is prioritised in our district. We believe that the sale of council homes under the right to buy scheme should be suspended until housing waiting lists have been addressed. We aim to support bids from community initiatives to build homes for the people of Lewes, such as the Lewes Community Land Trust (CLT), and we will continue to put pressure on the government to allow councils to borrow against their housing stock, to build more council houses.

Who are we? We are a diverse group including local campaigners, councillors, housing association workers, Tenants of Lewes District (TOLD), residents associations, Lewes CLT and other interested individuals. We are working hard for action, not just another meeting, so if you’d like to get involved, please contact Emily via the CONTACT page.
